Wolf Cub and Mayapple - Original Watercolor Painting. $500.00 fully framed
This little wolf cub was one of a litter of seven at the Timberwolf Preservation Society in Greendale, Wisconsin. The artist Janet Wissmann had the opportunity to sit inside an enclosure with this litter of cubs on a delightful Saturday afternoon. "As I watched them, one of the things that surprised me was how well-developed their social interactions were at this young age. The cub was only eight weeks old, yet he howled with all his might when he heard the siren of a distant fire truck!"

The Gathering Call is a beautiful transparent watercolor painting depicting three of the timber wolves Janet Wissmann met at the Timberwolf Preservation Society in Greendale, Wisconsin. She writes, "I had the pleasure of watching, photographing, and painting these wolves several times, and each time I visited I was amazed at their sheer size and power. A timber wolf is big! They are tall and lanky, very solid, and their strength and power are not immediately noticeable. During my visit I was instructed to extend the back of my hand outward so that the wolves could smell me and become acquainted. What happened next was a bit disconcerting: they began to growl and tumble and posture with one another in what seemed like a threatening manner only one foot away from me. I was assured by the caretaker that they were simply arguing with one another as to who would get the choice position while 'visiting' with me, but neither his assurances nor my own knowledge of wolf behavior had me convinced. I was at that moment in time quite pleased that there was a chain-link fence between us!"

This little wolf cub has just awoken from a nap amidst a garden of spring wildflowers! Unlike dogs, timber wolf cubs (or gray wolves) are always born in spring. And they grow quickly throughout the summer and autumn seasons so that they will be fully able to hunt by the time winter comes along.
In this painting, the artist chose to paint the yawning wolf cub with spring wildflowers that echo that great big yawn: large-flowered trillium and wild ginger. The two lady fern fronds at the back echo the shape of the cub's ears. Beautiful burl wood frame, ~18x20". Conservation rag mats.Can easily be shipped.

$500 fully framed. Watercolorist Janet Wissmann explains how this painting took shape: "Wolf cubs don't miss a thing! This little guy, with his huge ears and alert expression, intrigued me. He had the most vivid markings and coloring of all the cubs in the litter. These features prompted me to paint him with a springtime wildflower that has spikey leaves: the jack-in-the-pulpit. I then arranged the leaves and flower of this plant in such a manner as to accentuate the cub's very large ears. They are absolutely beautiful. The outside edges of the frame are black, as is the inside edge. Mats are 100% rag, creamy white over spring green.

On Second Thought - Timberwolf Original Watercolor Painting SOLD
This painting of a lone, pensive wolf is truly a study in the textures of fur. It's also an exercise in getting the viewer's attention. You see, one of an artist's goals is to get the viewer to look at one portion of a painting first and then lead the eye around the painting in a somewhat planned fashion. This can be done in a variety of ways. Watercolorist Janet Wissmann explains, "In this painting I wanted the viewer to notice the wolf's eyes and face first, so I painted those areas in much finer detail and with more brilliant colors and higher contrast than the other portions of the painting. This is quite evident at the border between the right side of the wolf's face and the fur behind it. The finer detail and subsequent higher contrast in this facial area are what make the viewer's eyes go there first; it stresses that this is the center of interest in the painting." On Second Thought isn't only a study in painting technique. It's also a study in wolf behaviour. The artist elaborates, "I suppose that may be why so many of my dog clients are drawn to this painting; they all mention that it reminds them of their dogs, be they German Shepherds, Labradors, Corgis, or even Poodles. Of course, who am I to argue? Dogs are virtually identical genetically to wolves, so much so that experts still aren't sure of their phylogeny. And what dog lover doesn't see a little bit of wolf every time Rex lies twitching by the fire at night, dreaming of chasing rabbits--or something bigger?"
